May Introduces Variety of Activities for Cd’A Young Adults

The Teen Advisory Board (TAB) at the Coeur d’Alene Public Library begins meeting Monday, May 6, at 4 p.m., and the library will offer several activities geared to young adults in the coming month, according to Young Adult Coordinator Laura Jenkins.

Jenkins, who began her new duties in April, said the upcoming programs will lead into an expanded Summer Reading program for teens.

“This is a program area the library has wanted to grow since moving to the new building in 2007,” said Director Bette Ammon.

The library has spaces dedicated for young adults – the library’s term for patrons who are about 12-18 years old – Teen Central with the main YA collection with comfortable seating and café tables and the 4Teens room with a bank of teen-use-only laptops, a Wii gaming system, graphic novels, manga, and teen magazines.

“We want to be able to find out what programs teens are interested in, and the TAB will be an essential part of that process,” Jenkins said. “We want TAB members to be the leaders in our teen group, and to see the Coeur d'Alene Public Library as more than just a source of information, but a place to feel welcome, be with friends, and do something fun together.”

The TAB will be suggesting and helping plan future programs and activities for teens, offering suggestions for new book and media orders, learning about additional volunteer opportunities, and generally helping the library to understand how it can meet the needs and wants of teens in our community.

“Members of the TAB will have the greatest influence on all that can be called ‘teen’ at the library,” Jenkins said.

The TAB will again meet 4-5 p.m. on May 20 in the Gozzer Room. Other May YA activities include:

► Thursday, May 16, 4-5:00 p.m.: Teen Gaming Tournament: Call of Duty Black Ops 2, Gozzer Room.

► Saturday, May 18, 1-2:00 p.m.: Teen Volunteering Information Session, Jameson Room.

► Tuesday, May 21, 4-5:00 p.m.: Teen Craft: Starlight Jars, Gozzer Room.

► Wednesday, May 22, 4-6:30 p.m.: Teen Movie: “Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows,” Gozzer Room.

► Tuesday, May 28, 4-5:00 p.m.: Teen Board Game Night, Gozzer Room.
