The Smithsonian is coming to the Coeur d’Alene Public Library. From Nov. 7 to Dec. 20 the library will host “Between Fences,” a traveling exhibit that looks at the history of fences and property ownership in the United States.
As part of this exhibit the library is planning an art display created by its patron families. Participants are invited to adopt a picket and decorate it on the theme of: “This is Our Home.”
The unfinished pickets can be picked up at the Seagraves Children’s Library on the library’s Parkside Level, 702 E. Front Ave. The pickets can then be painted or decorated as the participants see fit. The decorated pickets should be returned to the library no later than Friday, Oct. 31.
The decorated pickets will be used to create a fence to be on display in the children’s library while the “Between Fences” exhibit is in Coeur d’Alene.
“We hope families will look at this project as an opportunity for a dialogue about what home and property mean to each of us,” said David Townsend, Communications Coordinator and local organizer for the Between Fences exhibit. “We also hope participants will return to the library to see how others interpreted the theme.”
Between Fences has been made possible in Coeur d’Alene by the Idaho Humanities Council, the Richard K. and Shirley S. Hemingway Foundation and the Avista Foundation. Local projects are also supported by the Friends of the Coeur d’Alene Public Library.
Other activities related to the Smithsonian exhibit’s visit to Coeur d’Alene will be a photo exhibit created by youths through workshops led by local photographer Rebecca Harlow to be on display in the library’s Parkside Gallery beginning about Nov. 1.
Dr. Lisa Brady, Associate Professor of History at Boise State University and the Idaho Scholar for Between Fences, is scheduled to do a multimedia presentation in the library’s Community Room at 7 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 20.
And a panel discussion, “Both Sides of the Fence – Balancing Land Use Issues,” is being sponsored by the Kootenai County League of Women Voters on Dec. 3.
For more information contact Townsend at 208/769-2315 Ext. 426.
